The first video call

This is the step most people skip, and it is also the step that saves the most time. Ten minutes on camera tells you what a whole date would have told you, at a tenth of the cost.

How to suggest it without sounding odd

The mistake is to propose it like a test. "Let us do a video call before we meet" sounds like screening, and sometimes like suspicion.

What works is proposing it as a shortcut: "it is easier to talk than to type, fancy five minutes this evening?". That sounds like convenience, and it is also exactly what it is.

And name a short length explicitly. "Fifteen minutes" removes the pressure entirely, because both sides know there is an exit. If it goes well it will run over anyway.

What to do with the ten minutes

Not an interview. Do not ask questions from the profile, because you have already read it and the call turns into a compatibility check.

Instead, tell them something. A small story from the week, something that happened at work, something funny. People open up when somebody opens up first, and almost nobody does it first.

And what you are actually testing is not the answers but the rhythm: whether the conversation flows, whether they ask you anything at all, and what happens during two seconds of silence. Those three predict a good date better than any question.

How to end it, and what comes after

If you agreed on fifteen minutes, you can end at fifteen minutes. "That was fun, I have to run" is a perfectly legitimate sentence, and nobody takes offence when there was an agreed length.

If it went well, say so and suggest meeting. If it did not, a short message the next day beats disappearing: "it was nice to talk, I do not feel it is a match". It is unpleasant to write and it is always better.

On TOKME the call happens inside the app, so no phone number changed hands. If you decide not to continue, no channel to you remains, and blocking genuinely closes it.

Three things that lower the pressure

Name a short length

Fifteen minutes. Both sides know there is an exit.

Tell, do not interrogate

A small story opens people. Questions close them.

No phone number

The call is inside the app, so no channel stays open.

Frequently asked questions

Is a video call too early?

After a few days of good messages it is exactly the right time. If you wait a fortnight you usually never make the move at all.

What if I look bad on camera?

That is true of everybody, so it cancels out. And if it is the real obstacle, a masked date removes it entirely: five minutes with both sides hidden.

Do I have to give out my phone number?

No. The call happens inside TOKME. You decide whether and when to share personal details.

What does it cost?

One credit opens a calling pass for the pair, valid for a week and covering voice and video together. Unlimited talking during that week.

The app is almost here. Want to know when?

TOKME is in the final stages of store review. Leave an email address and you will be among the first to know on launch day, with a free credit pack for early sign-ups.

The address is used for the launch notice and nothing else. We will not pass it on, and you can leave the list at any time.
