Who is nearby, without anybody knowing where you are
Proximity is the most useful thing in a dating app and also the most dangerous. Both are true at once, and that is why the radar was built the way it was.
Why distance matters at all
A match who lives three hours away is usually a match you never meet. In practice, distance determines how often you see each other in the first month, and that determines whether anything happens.
The radar orders nearby people by distance, and the range can be narrowed or widened. You can also search worldwide, which is useful if you are planning to move city or simply want to look further.
And how it does not become a tracking tool
Your position snaps to a fixed grid of about 150 metres before any distance is computed, and bearings are rounded to 15 degree segments. The snap is fixed, so repeated readings from the same place return the same value and many of them cannot be averaged.
Raw coordinates are never sent to another user at any stage. What is sent is a rounded distance and a coarse bearing.
And if that is still not enough, private mode takes you off everybody’s radar. You keep browsing and approaching; nobody sees you.
And if you did not share a location
The app works without a location. In that state you get the worldwide search, and where a distance is unknown it simply is not shown.
The app will explain why sharing helps and offer to open the permission screen. If you refused permanently in the past, it sends you to the device settings rather than trying again and failing silently.

Does the app track me in the background?
No. Your location is read while you use the app, and snaps to a grid of about 150 metres before it is used for any calculation.
Can I use it without sharing a location?
Yes. The worldwide search works without one, and distances simply are not shown. Sharing improves relevance but is not required.
What does the other side see?
A rounded distance and a coarse bearing, and nothing else. No address, no street, no coordinates.
I live in a small town. Does that expose me?
In a small town any distance reveals more, which is why private mode exists. It takes you off everybody’s radar while leaving you able to see and approach.
