This fraud works on intelligent people, and that is part of its design. It does not target naivety, it targets feeling, and it almost always arrives in the same order.
The pattern, in order
Stage one: intense, fast contact. Messages morning and night, long conversations, and a sense of closeness built in days. It is pleasant, and it is also the main instrument.
Stage two: a consistent reason never to meet and never to do a video call. Work abroad, an oil rig, military service, a project overseas, a broken camera. The reasons vary and the pattern does not.
Stage three: a crisis. A medical problem, customs holding a parcel, a plane ticket, a frozen account. Always urgent, always temporary, always with a promise to repay.
Stage four: the request. A small amount at first, and if that goes through, larger ones. Sometimes it is inverted: an investment in a digital currency you will profit from.
Signs visible in the first week
Repeated refusal of a short video call. This is the simplest and strongest test there is. One plausible reason, three different reasons is a pattern.
