Who is in Haifa
The city divides into bands: Hadar, Merkaz HaCarmel, Neve Sha’anan, the German Colony and the lower city. Moving between them takes time, and it can be quicker to reach the Krayot from Haifa than to cross the city end to end. Worth remembering when you look at a distance on the radar.
At the same time Haifa has two large academic institutions, the Technion and the University of Haifa, and a young population that turns over every year. Both bring a substantial international and English-speaking presence, particularly around Neve Sha’anan and the Carmel.
Where to meet the first time
The German Colony is probably the simplest place for a first meeting in Haifa: compact, public, and with plenty of options within walking distance of each other.
Merkaz HaCarmel works well too, particularly in the evening. Hadar has more interesting and less predictable options, which suits anybody who wants something other than a cafe.
For a daytime meeting, the Louis Promenade is a pleasant option you can end whenever you like.
Distance, and what it means here
Distance in Haifa is more misleading than in any other Israeli city, because of the mountain. Two kilometres in a straight line can be fifteen minutes of driving up or down.
On the other hand, the Krayot, Tirat Carmel and Nesher are very close, and many people treat them as the same area. Widening the range by a few kilometres substantially increases the pool here.
Acre and Nahariya are within half an hour, and are worth considering if you are open to a short drive.
